6 Steps of Fundraising

Many volunteers are daunted with the prospect of participating in a non-profit organization's fundraising efforts. Some feel they don't have "those type of skills", others are intimidated to ask for gifts, while some are willing to help but just not sure how to go about it. By outlining fundraising in the following six simplified steps, organizations can help volunteers to understand the process and engage their participation in the steps in which they feel most comfortable.

  1. Identify: Potential prospects can come from just about anywhere – friends, family, colleagues, volunteers, community leaders, board members, costumers, etc.
  2. Qualify: Determine if potential prospect has both the capacity and the interest to support the organization
  3. Cultivate: Two way process of the organization and the prospect getting to know each other
  4. Solicit: Organization asks prospect for a contribution
  5. Contribute: Prospect contributes funds and is now a donor
  6. Steward: Organization acknowledges, recognizes and maintains ongoing relationship with donor
