There's No Getting Around Leadership
An organization may have a solid "case" to attract gift support; an ample number of identified potential major donors; and, a constituency that recognizes its vital mission. But without Board leadership in securing major gift support it's not likely that the organization will be able to financially sustain its most valued goals and objectives.
A Board Members Development Checklist
Here's a checklist to see how a Board member "measures up" in providing fundraising leadership for his/her organization:
- I have a clear understanding of my organization's mission, goals and funding priorities
- I understand and endorse the "case" why someone should give to my organization
- I contribute to the fullest measure within my financial means
- I assist staff in identifying and evaluating prospects
- I share in the personal contact and "cultivation" of potential major donors
- I make introductions for others to make gift solicitation visits
- I accompany others on gift solicitation visits, perhaps not specifically to solicit a gift
- I write personal follow-up and gift acknowledgement letters
- I take opportunities to compliment professional staff for their fundraising work and accomplishments
- If necessary, I am prepared to solicit a gift from a potential donor
- I do what I say I will do
